Overview
Kilimanjaro’s most challenging route
The Umbwe Route is the steepest, most direct and least-travelled trail up Kilimanjaro — a demanding but hugely rewarding climb for fit, well-prepared trekkers who want solitude and dramatic scenery. This 7-day itinerary joins the scenic southern circuit at Barranco to aid acclimatisation before the summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Because of its rapid ascent, good fitness and some prior hiking experience are strongly recommended.

Frequently asked questions
How high is Kilimanjaro and what is the summit?
Kilimanjaro’s summit is Uhuru Peak at 5,895m — the highest point in Africa and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain. It is a non-technical walk-up, but the altitude makes it a serious challenge.
Who should climb the Umbwe Route?
Umbwe is the steepest and most demanding Kilimanjaro route, best suited to fit trekkers with some hiking experience who want a quiet, challenging trail. We include an acclimatisation day to improve safety and summit success.
How hard is it to climb Kilimanjaro, and what is the success rate?
No technical climbing or ropes are needed — it is a long high-altitude walk. The biggest factor is acclimatisation: routes with more days have much higher summit success. Our guides monitor your health daily and set a steady “pole pole” (slowly) pace.
