This 5-day Mt Elgon Sipi Trail trek is the scenic route up Africa’s eighth-highest mountain, starting near the beautiful Sipi Falls and climbing through montane forest, bamboo and moorland — past hidden caves and high camps — to the summit of Wagagai (4,321m).

Day by Day

Your 5-day Mt Elgon Sipi Trail itinerary

DAY 1

Kapkwai to Tutum Cave Camp (2,667m)

From Mbale, passing via Sipi, you reach the Kapkwai Exploration Centre (UWA headquarters). After arranging guide, porters, food and camping gear, walk up to Tutum Cave Camp (2,667m) through montane and bamboo forest, to the spectacular cave hidden within the forest. Dinner and overnight. Distance: about 11 km.

DAY 2

Tutum Camp to Kajeri Camp (3,383m)

After breakfast, continue the hike up to Kajeri Camp (3,383m) for dinner and overnight. Distance: about 17 km.

DAY 3

Kajeri Camp to Mude Cave Camp (3,500m)

After breakfast, walk down past Muyembe before climbing to Mude Cave Camp (3,500m), where you join the Sasa Trail. Dinner and overnight. Distance: about 25 km.

DAY 4

Summit Wagagai (4,321m) & return to Mude

After breakfast, walk up through the moorland zone to the main peak, Wagagai (4,321m), then return to the Mude campsite for dinner and overnight. Distance: about 18 km.

DAY 5

Descent to Budadiri

The trek ends with a descent to Budadiri, the national park gate near Mbale, where your transfer awaits.
